About Payment Card Settlement
After thirteen years of litigation, a Federal Court has preliminarily approved a proposed settlement of a maximum of $6.24 billion and a minimum of $5.54 billion in a class action lawsuit. This lawsuit, called In re Payment Card Interchange Fee and Merchant Discount Antitrust Litigation, MDL 1720 (MKB) (JO), claims that Visa and Mastercard violated antitrust laws by excessively charging fees to merchants to accept Visa and Mastercard cards as a method of payment.
Visa and Mastercard have agreed to pay funds to a class of more than 12 million merchants who accepted the payment networks’ cards in the United States anytime from January 1, 2004 through January 25, 2019. Merchants have the option of filing a claim, excluding themselves from the settlement, objecting to the settlement, or doing nothing.
