What to get right

Pick a POS that fits how your business actually runs

Restaurants need tip adjustment, split checks, table or ticket tracking, and a way to keep tables turning on a busy night. Retail needs inventory counts, barcode scanning, and a clean way to handle returns and exchanges. Salons and barbershops need appointment booking, deposits, and tips assigned to the right stylist. Service businesses often need invoicing, card-on-file, and the ability to take payment at a customer's door. Write down your top three daily tasks and choose equipment and software around those.

Take every way your customers want to pay

Plan for chip cards, tap-to-pay cards and phones, and online or invoice payments if you sell beyond the counter. If you are adding an online store or already use accounting or customer software, TouchSuite's ERP, CRM, and e-commerce integrations are included at no monthly fee with a TouchSuite merchant account, so your sales data does not live in separate places.

Understand your pricing from day one

With interchange-plus pricing, you pay the card networks' actual cost plus a fixed margin, so you can see what is a network cost and what is the processor's. If you would rather not carry processing cost at all, a cash discount program is available. Ask yourself which approach suits your customers and your margins before you open, not after your first statement.

Keep your options open

A new business changes quickly in its first year. TouchSuite accounts are month-to-month, cancel anytime, no fees, so you are not locked in while you figure out what works. Qualifying merchants receive free terminals and POS hardware with no upfront cost, which helps when cash is tight before opening.

How it works

  1. Get your business basics in place. Before you apply for a merchant account, have your business entity formed, an EIN from the IRS, a business bank account in the business's name, and a government-issued photo ID for each owner. Licenses, seller's permits, and any health or occupancy approvals depend on your business type and location, so check with the City of Milwaukee and the State of Wisconsin for what applies to you. Starting these a few weeks before opening gives you breathing room.
  2. Talk through your setup. Tell us what you are opening, how you expect customers to pay, and what software you already use. We will help you choose terminals or a full POS, explain interchange-plus and the cash discount option, and answer questions in plain terms. If you are taking over an existing business or already processing, send us your most recent processing statement and we will show you, line by line, what you are paying and beat it, or tell you honestly that we cannot.
  3. Apply and get approved. You submit the application with your entity details, EIN, bank account information, and ID. Having everything ready and matching across documents, such as the exact legal business name, keeps the review moving. Applying ahead of your opening date means you are not waiting at the last minute.
  4. Set up and start taking payments. Most merchants are processing within 24 to 48 hours of approval. Use that time to load your menu, products, or services, set up tip and tax settings, train your staff, and run a few test transactions so opening day goes smoothly.

Questions to ask a processor

What pricing model will I be on, and can you show me how it works on a real statement?

Any processor should be able to walk you through this. TouchSuite uses interchange-plus pricing, where you pay the card networks' actual cost plus a fixed margin. If you have an existing statement, send it to us and we will go through it line by line and either beat it or tell you honestly that we cannot.

Am I signing a long-term contract, and what happens if I want to leave?

Read this part of any agreement carefully. TouchSuite accounts are month-to-month, cancel anytime, no fees.

Will the system handle the specifics of my business type?

Ask directly about the features you need: tip adjustments and split checks for restaurants, inventory and returns for retail, appointments and deposits for salons, invoicing and card-on-file for service businesses. Ask to see them, not just hear that they exist.

Will it connect to my accounting, customer, or online store software?

Integrations save hours of manual entry. With a TouchSuite merchant account, our ERP, CRM, and e-commerce integrations are included at no monthly fee.

How long until I can take payments, and what do you need from me?

Expect to provide your business entity details, EIN, business bank account, and owner ID. Most TouchSuite merchants are processing within 24 to 48 hours of approval, so the main variable is having your paperwork ready.

Is there a way to reduce or eliminate processing cost?

Some processors offer a cash discount program. TouchSuite offers one if you want to eliminate processing cost. Whether it fits depends on your customers and your business, so ask how it would look at your counter or on your invoices.
