Get Ready for Chip Cards

With fraud liability shifting to merchants in October, it’s time to consider upgrading your point-of-sale system to handle EMV credit card payments.

By now you’re probably seeing an increasing number of clients at your salon paying with EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) cards, also referred to as chip cards, which are designed to reduce fraud. They’ll be even more prevalent come October 15 this year, when fraud liability shifts from U.S. card issuers to merchants who have not upgraded their point-of-sale (POS) terminals to process EMV cards. “Although EMV migration isn’t mandatory, the risk that noncompliance creates is significant enough to put even a successful salon out of business in the case of consumer identity fraud,” says Sam Zietz, CEO of POS-system provider, TouchSuite. The liability shift makes it a good time to consider upgrading to an EMV-enabled POS solution designed with small businesses in mind.
