Restaurant Tip & Card Fee Impact Calculator
Your processor charges fees on the full amount it settles, including the tip that goes to your staff. Enter a few numbers to see what card fees cost you per check, per month, and on tips alone.
Have last month's processing statement and your POS sales summary handy. It takes about a minute.
Your fee impact
Note on method: one blended effective rate is applied to both the tip and the pre-tip portion of each check. Fixed per-transaction fees are charged once per transaction regardless of the tip, so if your statement includes significant per-item fees, fees on tips may be slightly overstated and fees on the pre-tip portion slightly understated.
Estimates are based on published industry averages and are not a quote. Actual rates depend on card mix, ticket size, industry, and underwriting.

How this works: the math and the assumptions
Every figure comes from your inputs and the assumptions listed below. S is monthly card sales including tips, C is the average pre-tip check, t is your average tip as a decimal, r is your effective rate, and L is your number of locations.
- Charged amount per check = C × (1 + t)
- Pre-tip card sales = S ÷ (1 + t); monthly card tips = S × t ÷ (1 + t)
- Estimated card checks per month = S ÷ (C × (1 + t))
- Estimated monthly card fees = S × r; annual = monthly × 12
- Monthly fees on tips = monthly card tips × r; annual = monthly × 12
- Share of fees paid on tips = t ÷ (1 + t)
- Fee cost per check = C × (1 + t) × r, split into C × r (pre-tip) and C × t × r (tip)
- Card fees as a percent of pre-tip sales = r × (1 + t)

How this calculator works
When a guest pays by card and adds a tip, your processor settles the full amount, check plus tip, and charges its fees on that total. The tip goes to your staff, but the fee on it usually comes out of your deposit. This calculator puts a dollar figure on that. It takes your monthly card sales (tips included), backs out how much of that total is tips using your average tip percentage, and applies your effective rate to both parts. It also divides your sales by the average charged amount per check to estimate how many card checks you run and what fees cost on each one.
Your effective rate is the most important input
Your effective rate is your total processing fees for a month divided by your total card sales for that month, and it captures everything: percentage fees, per-transaction fees, and monthly charges. If you don't know it, the calculator uses an assumed restaurant industry average of 2.75%. That is an estimate based on published industry averages, not a quote, and your results are labeled when it is used. For a truer picture, pull last month's statement and divide total fees by total card sales.
One simplification to be aware of
The calculator applies one blended rate to the whole check, including the tip. In practice, fixed per-transaction fees are charged once per transaction no matter the tip, so if your statement carries significant per-item fees, the fees on tips may be slightly overstated. The full report adds a per-location breakdown, a sensitivity table showing how fees shift with different rates and tip levels, and a plain-English guide to the options restaurants look at, including interchange-plus pricing, cash discount programs, and pay-at-table.
Frequently asked questions
Do restaurants pay credit card fees on tips?
Generally yes. Processors charge fees on the amount they settle, and when a tip is added to a card payment, the settled amount includes the tip. That is why this calculator separates fees paid on tips from fees paid on the food and drink portion of the check.
How do I find my effective rate?
Take one month's processing statement. Add up every fee (percentage fees, per-transaction fees, monthly, PCI, and statement fees) and divide by total card sales for that month. For example, $2,400 in fees on $80,000 in sales is a 3.00% effective rate. Averaging two or three months gives a steadier number.
Why does the calculator use 2.75% if I leave the rate blank?
2.75% is an assumed restaurant industry average based on published industry averages. It is an estimate for planning, not a quote and not a TouchSuite rate. Your actual rate depends on card mix, ticket size, and how your processor prices, so entering your own effective rate gives a more accurate result.
Can I pass card fees to customers or deduct them from tips?
Rules on surcharges, cash discount programs, and deducting processing fees from employee tips vary by card brand, state, and labor law. This tool does not say what is allowed where you operate. Confirm with the card brands, your state, and your own employment counsel before making any change.
Is this a quote from TouchSuite?
No. Estimates are based on published industry averages and are not a quote. Actual rates depend on card mix, ticket size, industry, and underwriting. If you want a real comparison, a payments specialist can review your statement.
Does the per-transaction fee apply to the tip too?
A fixed per-transaction fee is charged once per transaction, regardless of the tip. Percentage-based fees apply to the full settled amount, tip included. Because this calculator uses one blended effective rate, it may slightly overstate fees on tips if your statement has large per-item fees.
