The Code Word Business Owners Need To Use During Fraudulent Transactions

There are times when the validity of a transaction is questioned. For these specific instances, there is a voice authorization business owner can request through their processer. This voice authorization phone call alerts your processor of the suspicious activity without alerting the potential scammer. Using this tactic could help prevent a fraudulent transaction from taking place.


The Codeword

Code 10 – A preventative authorization request by which a business is notifying their processor that a suspicious transaction is in the works. This process verifies additional information on the transaction and method of payment through a series of yes or no questions. Normally,  Merchant Welcome Kits have a section on Code 10, with detailed instructions on what steps to take during an authorization call.  Information on Code 10 should be read, printed and posted in or near the check-out area, serving as a reminder for staff.


Take a picture

When somebody suspected of committing a fraudulent transaction is on site, a picture of their license and credit card should be taken. Business owners should set up devices that capture pictures and video of transactional data, this comes in handy as either proof or evidence. For protection purposes, businesses should train staff on the importance of capturing the necessary identification details.


But is this legal?

Requiring pictures for the mere use of a credit card is not accepted. Pictures can only be captured if the transaction is suspected to be fraudulent. Capturing images and or video of the individual and credit card can be used for evidence purposes.
